For Andrew: Mike’s ride with the Suncor Sun Riders

For Mike, for the Sun Riders, and for every participant, the Tour is more than a cycling event — it’s a powerful reminder of why we ride: for loved ones, for survivors, and for more hope in the face of cancer.

When Mike Haig lined up at the start of the Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer, he carried more than his cycling gear — he carried the memory of his close friend, Andrew Beveridge, who passed away this year after a year-long struggle with cancer.

“A very close friend of mine, Andrew Beveridge. I’m riding in his memory,” Mike shared.

The Tour became a way to honour Andrew and thank the incredible staff at the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre, while giving back to the community that had been there for his friend and their family.

This year, Mike rode alongside 65 of his colleagues on the Suncor Sun Riders team, one of the largest groups in the Tour. Together, they faced headwinds, long climbs, and emotional moments at the opening ceremony.

“For folks like me who haven’t biked in a while, it’s really nice to get their support. We were encouraging each other. It’s one big team today.”

That sense of togetherness, both within Suncor and across the Tour community, is what kept riders going — pushing each other forward mile after mile.

Suncor’s Commitment

Mike’s story is one of many within the Suncor Sun Riders. For 12 years, Suncor employees have participated in the Tour and supported the cause, raising more than $1.6 million for cancer research and care in Alberta.

In 2025, the Sun Riders achieved their biggest milestone yet, raising nearly $365,000 — more than double their original goal. And this year, Suncor strengthened its commitment by joining the Tour as a Northern Lights Partner.

By the time Mike crossed the finish line, the ride had become more than a test of endurance. It was a moment of reflection, pride, and memory.

“It was good to finish. Crossing the finish line today, it was an emotional experience. Lots of memories.”

And above all, it was for Andrew. As Mike put it, “He was with me here today.”

For Mike, for the Sun Riders, and for every participant, the Tour is more than a cycling event — it’s a powerful reminder of why we ride: for loved ones, for survivors, and for more hope in the face of cancer.
