Why 164 AltaGas Riders Said Yes

Cancer doesn’t show up as a statistic. It shows up as someone you know. A name you recognize. A call you don’t expect.

One in two Albertans will face cancer in their lifetime, and one in four will not survive. These are not just numbers. They are our people – the ones we love, lean on, and the ones we can’t afford to lose.

In just three years, Team AltaGas has built something remarkable.

From 71 riders in 2024, to 164 and counting in 2026, the team is growing fast and with purpose.

Last year, they crossed the $1 million mark in fundraising – a milestone that set a new pace for what this team can achieve.

And in 2026, Team AltaGas is speeding up.

This is not a team of seasoned cyclists. It is a team built by people who say yes before they feel ready and then show up and figure it out. First-time riders. Returning riders. Colleagues, friends, and family members who decide the reason is strong enough to take on.

That is what drives this team forward – not experience, but willingness and camaraderie.

Hejdi Carlsen

Sr. Vice President, Chief Safety, Sustainability and Communications Officer

For Hejdi, the Tour is about more than the kilometers ahead – it is about showing up for a cause that impacts so many, riding alongside the people who matter most. This year, Hejdi is riding with three generations of her own family, inspired by her father-in-law, whose example has helped bring them all to the road together.

“Riding in three generations, I think we all look at my father-in-law, and he has inspired all of us to make sure that we always stay active. So, when we talk about him being the most experienced rider, he has reminded me that that actually means he’s the oldest rider on the AltaGas team.”

Carl Noel

Sr. Specialist, Strategic Planning & Analysis

For Carl, the Tour starts with remembrance – honouring the people he carries with him to the start line. Riding in memory of his mom and stepmom, he says the moment that stays with him the most is the morning procession, when “they walk out the ghost bike in the procession. There’s a very deep, moving moment right there.”  It is a powerful reminder that behind every kilometer is something far more personal.

Kiana Downing

Talent Acquisition Specialist, Early Career Programs

For Kiana, the Tour is more than a ride – it is a way to carry her dad’s memory forward, turning loss into something meaningful. What stayed with her most from last year’s ride was the feeling of being surrounded by people who understood, without needing any explanation, that cancer never affects just one person. It ripples through families, friendships and entire communities. And in that shared understanding, she found strength. As she puts it, “At the end of the day, we’re all connected. That sense of being together to fight cancer.”

This is why we ride

This is why the Tour matters. Every dollar raised through the Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer helps fund leading-edge research, treatment and care across Alberta, giving more people access to the support they need and giving families more time with the people they love.

Because in the end, this ride is about more than who crosses the finish line – it is about helping more Albertans get the chance to.
