What keeps him coming back: John Merrett’s Story with Team RBC

From first-time riders stepping outside their comfort zones to lifelong friendships formed on the road, John Merrett has seen the power of community firsthand.

When John Merrett signed up for his first Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer, it was because of his colleagues on Team RBC.

Years later, that initial invitation has grown into something much bigger.

As a former competitive cyclist, John has spent plenty of time on a bike. Yet the Tour continues to stand apart because of the people who take part and the purpose that brings them together.

“At first, I was inspired through my colleagues on Team RBC, but after riding my first Tour Alberta for Cancer, the inspiration came from the participants,” John says. “It was simply amazing to me the variety of people — young, old, athletic and not — that completed the ride.”

One quote has stayed with him throughout the years:

“Riding for two days straight is tough, but it’s nothing compared to what people with cancer endure. Their strength reminds me that I can do this too.”

Like many riders, John also carries a personal connection to the cause.

His father-in-law, Barry, faced prostate cancer with remarkable courage. While his battle was brief, the impact on John’s family continues to be felt in the moments they shared and the memories they continue to hold close.

“His memory lives on every time we golf, boat, run and gather for family dinners,” John says. “His laugh was contagious, and he is deeply missed.”

“If I can help prevent the loss of a family member from cancer, that becomes my motivation.”

As a returning participant, one of John’s favourite parts of the weekend is watching others discover what they’re capable of.

“It’s been amazing to see how many RBC’ers have stepped out of their comfort zone, without cycling experience, to take on the challenge of riding 100 kilometres for two days.”

The Tour has also created opportunities to build relationships that extend well beyond the ride itself. Hours spent together on the road have led to mentorship opportunities, stronger working relationships and lasting friendships.

“With two days of four-plus hours each on a bike, I’ve had quality time to mentor, learn about others’ business and form genuine friendships — albeit with limited discussions on the hills.”

Those shared experiences are part of what makes Team RBC such a special part of the Tour community. Riders from across the organization come together around a common purpose, supporting one another while helping raise funds for cancer care and research in Alberta.

“I’m proud to wear the Team RBC jersey as part of a 1,700-rider community that raised over $7.4 million for cancer care across Alberta. Every dollar stays in the province, supporting all cancer centres and the patients who depend on them.”

For John, the Tour is a chance to honour Barry’s memory, support Albertans facing cancer today and help create a future with more hope for families across the province.

As he prepares for another year on the road with Team RBC, he remains inspired by the same thing that first brought him to the Tour: people coming together to do something extraordinary for others.
